As math specialist my roles include, overseeing benchmark testing in grades K-5, assessing new students entering CIP, working with teachers to guide best practices in mathematics, and collaborate with teachers to group students appropriately using the Response to Intervention model (RtI). My favorite part of my job is working with individuals and small groups of students on targeted and specific skills to improve their mathematical thinking and learning.
Captain Isaac Paine’s Unique RtI Program:
As part of the continuing effort to improve the academic and behavioral performance of all students, Captain Isaac Paine uses a support system called Response to Intervention (RtI). RtI is designed to meet the needs of students by providing research-based interventions in a small group or individual setting. RtI focuses on improving the academic performance of all students so that they will meet and exceed grade level expectations. The RtI process allows us to identify specific student needs and provide targeted supports to quickly close achievement gaps. Interventions occur for six-weeks or more depending on student need. The student’s progress is directly and frequently monitored to make sure they are responding to the intervention. RtI is used for all students at Captain Isaac Paine, whether they require intensive support, enrichment or current grade level curriculum, they are closely monitored and given the targeted instruction they need.
